the story is in the name

the cabinet

The Veracity QW's name was derived from its unique cabinet design. While from the outside it may look similar to a tall bass reflex cabinet, the design is actually a tapered tube almost 80 inches tall, folded in half internally.

While some might refer to this as a transmission line, there is some debate as to the accuracy of that label. While there are similarities, the mass-loaded tapered quarter wave tube (ML TQWT) is a unique design based on the pioneering work of Martin J. King (www.quarter-wave.com)

As predicted by King's mathematical models, the ML TQWT design takes advantage of quarter wavelength standing waves inside the enclosure to produce the bass response emanating from the port. So rather than being inert (as is the design goal in a speaker such as the Veracity HT1), the cabinet is actually an integral part of the speaker system.

The ML TQWT design offers enhanced bass response when compared to standard cabinet designs using the same drivers. Midrange loading is also affected, resulting in a more relaxed (some would say more musical) midrange response. These performance attributes are clearly audible.

With the Veracity QW, the resulting "you are there" realism is captivating to say the least. Bass response is extended without sounding "boomy" and uncontrolled. The midrange response is smooth and effortless. Add the transparency offered by the G2 ribbon, and you have a speaker that literally disappears into the room.

ML TQWT - rare and exotic?

With its obvious performance advantages, you might wonder why so few retail speakers incorporate TL and ML TQWT cabinet designs. The reasons are two-fold: design complexity and manufacturing cost.

Prior to Martin King's work, there were no mathematical models that could be used to accurately predict cabinet tuning. So the design process involved time-consuming trial and error. Since time-to-market is critical for any manufacturer selling retail, TL and ML TQWT designs were not generally considered practical.

These cabinets are also more complex and costly to build. It is easy to construct a simple rectangular box common with most retail offerings. Unfortunately, they don't offer the significant advantages of an ML TQWT design.

Fortunately, as a result of Martin King's work, ML TQWT designs will be more and more common in time to come. But you don't have to wait. The Veracity QW is available today.

QW detailthe drivers

The Veracity QW's utilize the same the world-class speaker drivers found in the Veracity HT1's.

the crossover

The crossover is the circuitry that fine-tunes the relationship between the specific drivers used and the cabinet they are mounted in. As such, it is the single most important part of a speaker. Anyone can design a speaker using similar drivers, but Dennis Murphy-designed crossovers are responsible for the tightly-integrated Veracity sound.

As with the HT1's, the QW's crossover is another classic Dennis Murphy design. What makes his crossovers designs so good? Obviously, while he has a good handle on the technical issues involved (filtration theory), he does not have a monopoly in this regard. His advantage is in the marriage of that expertise with well-developed listening skills.

Dennis is a classically-trained musician who performs on a regular basis. So he knows intimately how live music should sound. All the technical theory in the world isn't a substitute for the critical listening skills he has developed over the years. And, in the end, it is these skills that spell the difference between an adequate crossover and one that brings out the finest qualities in every other component in a great speaker design.

The result

When you combine high-performance drivers selected from among the worlds finest, mount them in a cabinet that enhances their performance, and combine them with a finely-tuned crossover built with the finest components available, the result is the Veracity QW - arguably one of the finest 2-way designs available anywhere at any price. But don't take our word for it,
