SoundScape 12 features
general features
The SoundScape a number of design attributes that separate it from many speakers on
the market today. Among them are:
•
separate woofer and midrange/tweeter sections to reduce woofer vibration impact
on midrange/tweeter performance
•
woofer section design with dual opposed passive radiators
•
open-back midrange line that allows user-controllable ambiance control to tune
the response to the listening environment and individual taste
•
minimal baffle around tweeter for maximum dispersion
•
user-switchable tweeter response levels
the drivers
No compromise was allowed in the selection of SoundScape drivers. They were not
necessarily the most expensive driver we tested. However, they were the best drivers
for this particular application. No expense was spared.
Selection of the tweeter was relatively simple. RAAL has been on the
cutting edge of ribbon tweeter development for the past few years. Since
we knew we wanted a ribbon tweeter for this design, we contacted
Aleksander and he was able to supply us with a driver that was perfect for
this application. In this case, we were able to cross the RAAL lower than
many other ribbon tweeters would allow - about 1900Hz.
The midrange was more problematic. The midrange voicing had to be
perfect in order to preserve a sense of focus and clarity while still
providing adequate rear wave ambiance. We tested a number of midrange
drivers in actual fully-developed prototype speakers. We wanted to leave
nothing to chance. In the end, the 3” Accuton midrange driver simply
performed the best.
We had, for many years, loved the woofer used in our HT3’s. So when it came time to
select a woofer for the SoundScape design, we turned to John Janowitz at Acoustic
Elegance. John helped us design 10” and 12” woofers that provide the bass extension
we desired along with the smooth upper end response, allowing us to cross to the
midrange around 300Hz.
To round out the design, dual horizontally-opposed passive radiators are used to provide
bass tuning. This allows deep, impactful and musical bass while totally eliminating the
“chuffing” inherent in a typical ported design.
the cabinet
The SoundScape cabinets represent a departure for the type of speaker cabinets we
have been building over the years.
The midrange/tweeter section is molded in a single
piece using a specially-developed high density
polymer. This material is more dense than typical
speaker cabinet construction materials and was
designed to minimize any hint of cabinet resonance.
The tweeter section is contoured in a minimalistic
fashion to provide the utmost in tweeter dispersion.
There is practically no baffle to interfere with the
optimum performance of the RAAL ribbon.
The midrange section features an open back. This
provides midrange ambiance that can be tuned to
the user’s taste. You can leave it open for maximum
ambient sound. You can use light or heavy acoustic
stuffing to minimize ambiance. Or you can attach
the sold rear grill to create a sealed midrange. This
provides maximum flexibility to tailor the
SoundScape response to your room and your
particular taste.
The woofer section of the SoundScape 12’s feature
2” thick walls all around and is well-braced in all
directions. This creates a woofer cabinet that can
pass even the toughest “wrap test.” The mass of
the woofer cabinet keeps resonance to an absolute
minimum resulting is clean, deep and musical bass
the likes of which most subwoofers are not able to
duplicate.
the sound
When we set out to design the SoundScapes, our goal was to produce an extremely
neutral speaker that imparts no sonic signature of its own. It simply passes on the
signal it is fed - nothing more, nothing less. In that regard, it has no particular sound
of its own. All you hear is the music.
Sonic highlights include:

a detailed and transparent top end with extension to 100K
