Pharos HET (high-efficiency tower) ...
...a highly-detailed and accurate, tube-friendly,
high-efficiency (95db) tower design.
One of the most important aspects in the design of any
speaker is the choice of drivers. In this case, choice of a tweeter was simple.
The G2 pure ribbon tweeter used in our Veracity series speakers is a great
performer and we saw no reason to look further. As for the midrange and woofer
drivers, the options were more limited.
Some
years ago, all speaker drivers were quite efficient since all amplifiers were
limited in terms of power. But with higher power amps becoming the norm,
speaker designers normally look to limit speaker footprints. Which means
drivers are less efficient (higher efficiency drivers require more cabinet
volume). Since the demand for drivers that work in smaller cabinets is so high,
that is where most driver manufacturers focus their attention. That means
state-of-the-art high efficiency drivers are limited in number.
For the midrange, we chose a 6.5" PHL driverone of
the finest high-efficiency midrange drivers available today. We also chose a
12" JBL wooferhighly regarded by high-efficiency speaker aficionados.
The result is a 3-way speaker that is 95db efficient. As
indicated by this
frequency
response plot, it is essentially ruler-flat from 44Hz to 25,000Hz (-3db at
40KHz), with an F10 (in-room response) of around 35Hz. It delivers
crystal-clear transparency on the top end, extremely accurate midrange capable
of resolving minute details in the source recording and, at the same time,
delivers deep, musical bass...all with inaudible levels of distortion. What's
more, it's imaging capabilities are difficult to put into words.
additional details
The Pharos HET's are very tube-friendly. This is a
nominal 8-ohm design that is 95db efficient. The impedance curve is a nearly
flat resistive load of +/-1 Ohm above 100 Hz, which will be extremely easy for
any amp to drive.
There are no parallel surfaces anywhere in the very well
braced cabinet. The top portion of the cabinet containing the tweeter and
midrange is sealed. The woofer section is ported with two 3" free-flowing
flared ports.
That 44" tall obelisk-shaped cabinets are 17" deep and
wide at the bottom and taper to a pointed top. They are very complicated to
build. But this design allows the proper internal volume for the woofer, yet
results in a cabinet that appears visually far smaller than it actually is.
