December # 2
The Story
Pete paid us a visit just as we were starting work on speakers for
the Rocky Mountain Audiofest. We had just finished a pair of very special HT3's
with a full-length solid bubinga front baffle. When I showed him pictures, that
is exactly what he wanted. He especially like the roundover on the woofer inset
- something that is not possible with a straight veneered front.
The pair we had just finished had a hand-rubbed,
high-gloss finish. Pete wasn't sure that's what he wanted. So he opted for our
standard finish.
Then we met up at the RMAF where he saw some speakers
done in a hand-rubbed finish. He thought he might reconsider the finishing
options.
Well, he eventually decided a hand-rubbed finish was the
way to go. Unfortunately, photographs just can't capture the luster of the
finish. You really have to see it in person to appreciate the difference.
On this pair, we used a poly sealer followed by high
gloss poly topcoat and rubbed it out. It is quite a bit more transparent than
lacquer and has a higher gloss factor. It is really like glass. And it is very
durable - impervious to water and extremely hard and scratch resistant. It all
adds up to a very nice, rich finish.
Happy listening, Pete and Brenda!
What's next?
Curly makore and Mexican cocobolo. Stay tuned...
