November # 3
The Story
Joe Brandi wanted a pair of HT3's done in dark walnut burl with
claro walnut front baffles.
The problem with most burls is that the sheet sizes are
quite small. This part of the tree just isn't very large. So it took a few
months of searching before we found a beautiful batch of burled walnut that was
dark and large enough for the project. It had a gorgeous grain structure and
beautiful burled figuring.
Naturally, burled wood like this looks best when done in
a high-gloss, hand-rubbed finish. At first, Joe was going to go with a standard
finish. But as the project progressed, Joe changed his mind (without any
prompting from me).
A fellow woodworker paid us a visit just about the time
we were assembling these speakers. "They look like they belong on the dashboard
of a Jaguar," he said. I couldn't argue with that.
Happy listening, Joe!
What's next?
Makore and cocobolo make a great combination. Stay
tuned...
