The Story

This pair of Veracity HT2's also began life as a demonstration pair for the Rocky Mountain Audiofest.

I had always wanted to do a pair of speakers in a guitar finish. I own a few guitars, but my favorite is a work of art by Tom Anderson. It plays wonderfully and is finished in a classic sunburst guitar finish. You've probably seen this finish before. The middle is an amber color that fades into a dark reddish color near the edges and finally to black or dark brown.

I had recently purchased a wonderful batch of quilted Western Big Leaf Maple - the same basic wood used in my Tom Anderson. So I thought I would try a sunburst finish.

After the veneer had been applied to the cabinets, I dyed them with amber, dark red and black. It was a near-perfect dye job. But when I stood back and took a look, something just wasn't quite right.

The next day, a friend stopped by and I asked him for an opinion. "What is it," he said. "Back to the '70's?"

He was right. It looks great on a small guitar body, but not on a larger speaker. So we re-veneered the cabinets and went for a toned-down version - two tones of brown. We finished by rubbing them out to a high-gloss...just like a guitar.

In the end, we put far more time into these speakers than could be justified. But when you stand back a look at them, it was worth the effort.
