November # 1

Joe Muratori wanted a pair of HT3's (and an HTC center channel) done in black for home theater purposes.

The Story

Rather than black satin lacquer, normally used for black speakers, I suggested using a highly figured veneer and dying it black.

After some give and take, we settled on Japanese Tamo Ash, a veneer with a "peanut shell" type figuring pattern.

As I played with dyes, I came across some aniline dye I had lying around. It was called "pearl grey." I don't know exactly why I bought it in the first place, but thought it would be nice to shoot some samples of that as well.

Dye Job

We settled on a 50% solution of pearl grey dye. But as I shot it, I gave a few extra coats to the cabinet edges. Thus, they fade from a very dark grey (almost black) to a medium grey in the panel centers. This is a technique used often in guitar finishing.

What's next?

Another experiment in aniline dye.
