HT3

November

After shipping my first pair of Veracity HT3's (October Veracity-of-the-Month) to Brad Johnson, I obviously had to resplace them.

Ever since I had built a pair of MBOW1's in fiddleback mahogany, this remained one of my favorite woods. So I thought I'd try it out on this pair of HT3's. I could use regular mahogany for the plinths (bases), but finding the right wood to match for the front baffle was a challenge. Then I remembered an auction I had won a few months earlier.

thuya burl baffleThanks e-Bay

I love exotic woods and veneers. And e-Bay is a great source for them. One day I decided to search for thuya burl. I didn't expect to find any, but there was a book-matched pair of pieces that seemed to be the right size. I emailed the person offering the pair and asked him for size information. He informed me that he expected a bidding war on these pieces but that nobody had submitted a bid. He said he was really hoping no one would, since he didn't want to sell it for the minimum bid.

The auction was ending in 15 minutes. Sorry, the pieces were mine. I got a great buy, not knowing at the time how well they would work out for this particular project.

just for insurance

Since I was not able to hang on to my last pair very long, I am starting another personal pair so that I don't get caught without again. I love these speakers.

what's next?

Well, I can't very well be without a pair of HT3's, now can I? So I'm planning to build a pair with curly African cherry and a madrone burl front baffle. But first, I had two clients order HT3's a few days apart. The funny thing is, both of them wanted English sycamore. So I guess these come first...

Stay tuned...
