HT3-N

October # 3

The Story

HT3-NDennis Murphy and I had been looking at the Nextel version of the Seas Excel W18 for a while when we decided to see how it would work as an alternative to the magnesium-coned W18 that has always been used as a midrange in the HT3's.

Since we were heading for the Rocky Mountain Audiofest in Denver, it seemed like a good opportunity to try it out for the show. Dennis got to work on the crossover design and I started work on the cabinets.

wooferI purchased a large board of museum-grade Mexican cocobolo and decided to use it for a full-length front baffle. Not only would this provide a very dramatic front baffle, it would also allow us the opportunity to do a round-over on the woofer inset - a nice design touch we had used in a previous Veracity of the Month. The remainder of the cabinets would be high-gloss, hand-rubbed piano black.

We also built matching outboard crossover enclosures so that we could use these with both the passive crossover and an active crossover via DEQX.

We pulled out all the stops and managed to finish them just in time to load them up for the show.

Typically, the rooms at audio shows are not the best acoustically. In fact, they are very poor. So we were not that happy with the sound we were getting when we set them up. The evening after the first day, we decided to set up a pair of regular HT3's for comparison purposes. As soon as we did, we realized it was more than a room issue.

Once we got back home, we discovered a wiring error in the crossover that resulted in too little midrange. Great bass, great top end, but nowhere near enough midrange. Well, that was a lesson learned. From now on, no speaker will be played at an audio event until it is tested and proven.

At any rate, the problem has been addressed and they sound as wonderful as they should. I will be keeping this pair for a while...it's just too nice to part with.

What's next?
