HT1 camphor burl

camphor burlOctober # 1

I saw a batch of camphor burl about a year ago and just had to have it. The sheet size was small and wouldn't even cover the side of an HT1 cabinet. Normally I would pass a batch like this by. But it was so striking, I just had to have it.

I knew nobody would call me asking for this veneer. So I decided to build myself a pair of HT1's using it. I also had a piece of African ribbon-striped sapele hardwood laying around and the colors seemed to match very sell.

As I said, this veneer required a horizontal splice to make a sheet size large enough for an HT1 side panel. Can you spot the splice in this photo? (Hint: It is about 20% down from the top.)

A Fitting Finish

After veneering the cabinets, I was so excited about the combination, I decided to go all out.

I finished the cabinets in a high-gloss, hand-rubbed piano lacquer finish. This, of course, made them very difficult to photograph since they reflected everything!

I also used Blackhole 5 inside the cabinet and upgrade the binding posts to Cardas.

I don't imagine it will be all that long before someone wants these bad enough to pay the extra costs involved. But I will certainly enjoy them as long as I have them. They are undoubtedly the nicest looking HT1's I have done to date. They will make a great fit in somebody's home!

What's next?

I promised a look at my personal HT3a's? I try to keep my promises.
