August # 3
The Story
Every once and a while we are contacted by an individual who really
wants pull out all the stops. This pair of HT3's is the most ambitious we have
produced to date.
Kirk Lesiacsek was looking for something really
stunning. So we searched for quite a while and found a spectacular piece of
solid figured bubinga lumber. This board was really special.
As we talked about how to take maximum advantage of it,
we decided to produce full-length front baffles. And since mounting the woofer
flush with this baffle would put it 1/2" forward of where it is normally
installed, we decided to inset it 1/2" into the solid wood baffle and round
over the cut-out.
This resulted in a very handsome detail we will probably use often
into the future.
The bubinga lumber was quite a bit more red than the
bubinga veneer used on the sides of the cabinet. So we decided to spray a light
coat of red aniline dye on the veneer to help match it up. It turned out to be
a great idea.
Kirk also decided to upgrade to Sonicaps, DH labs
internal wiring and more.
When we were finishing up the cabinets, Kirk called to
ask how things were going. I told him that I thought they were spectacular, but
if they were mine, I would definitely hand rub the finish (a costly,
labor-intensive process). They were just too nice not to.
Kirk thought about it for a few seconds and said "go for
it." We did, and the results were stunning. After finishing them, I walked past
them every once and a while over the next few days. Each time I did, I found
them to be stunning.
Every once and a while we produce a pair of speakers we
REALLY hate to ship. This pair was definitely in that class.
Happy listening Kirk!
What's next?
Bubinga HT1's. Stay tuned...
