HT3

May # 1

The Story

Kim Hwang knew just what he wanted. Without prompting, he ordered a pair of HT3's with African makore veneer and Australian lacewood for the front baffles, trim and plinths.

front baffleIt just so happened that I ran across a very wide lacewood board a few weeks earlier. This is very unusual. Normally you can only find boards that are about 5" wide. This board was 14" wide. So it worked perfectly for both the trim and the front baffles.

I used lacewood veneer on one of the first pairs of speakers I ever built and have always been fond of it. So it was nice to be able to work with such a great piece of wood.

Kim also wanted an HTC center channel and I looked long and hard to try and find a board wide enough. In the end, I had to splice two very nice boards together for the center channel.

I think the lacewood works very well with the darker figured makore veneer. It provides just enough contrast.

Happy listening Kim!

What's next?

I recently found a great batch of really attractive ropey cherry veneer and some nice bird's eye maple lumber. A pair of HT3's are on the way! Stay tuned...
