The Story
Rarely to we highlight a design that is not part of our
normal offerings. But in this case we simply had to make an exception.
Mike Decelle had ordered a pair of HT1's along with an
HTC center channel. But he wanted subwoofers to augment the bottom end. Not
wanting a "normal" sub, Mike designed his own with the thought that they could
serve two purposes - subwoofers and stands for his HT1's.
Mike sent me an Excel spreadsheet with the cabinet
design he had developed. They would house 12" TC Sounds TC2+ drivers. The
cabinet depth was 15" - same as the HT1's. The tops were also sized exactly the
same as the bottom of the HT1's. And the height was calculated to put the HT1
tweeters at the appropriate height.
Since the design required a certain internal volume for
the TC Sounds subwoofers, Mike played with the shape until the internal volume
was correct.
When I first saw the design, I was somewhat concerned
about the radical angle where the taper began on the cabinets. Would I be able
to wrap veneer around this bend or would it be too sharp?
In the end, we were able to sand the transition smooth
enough to accomodate the veneer.
The cabinets were completed in a high-gloss, hand-rubbed
finish and turned out quite nice indeed. Nice job Mike!
What's next?
If you like lacewood, you'll love some new HT3's coming
soon! Stay tuned...
