Veracity of the
month...
every so often this page will highlight a
truly unique "Special Edition" Veracity project...
February
Well, it has been a few months since I posted any
Veracity-of-the-Month pics. So I thought I should get back at it.
Mark Spagnolo wanted white painted speakers. He lives in
NYC, but thought that white speakers would look good in his Florida home. I
told him I had some Fiddleback English Sycamore that was very white and would
look nicer than paint.
I suggested we use burled maple for the front baffles.
But when I went to cut the piece I was thinking about, it was too narrow. So
the search was on for a replacement.
I had always wanted to work with spalted wood. When I
ran across a book-matched set of pieces in spalted American sycamore (not
related to English sycamore), I thought it would be real nice. So I sent a
photo of the boards to Mark.
He had good taste
I didn't think Mark would go for this wood. I thought he
would think it was too "over-the-top."
But after he saw it, he emailed me and told me that
these were some of the most awesome pieces of wood he had every seen. He even
offered some advice has to how to cut them to preserve the greatest amount of
spalting.
high-gloss lacquer
He also asked for a hand-rubbed, high-gloss lacquer
finish. So that's what we did.
I think it is one of the nicest pairs I have ever
done.

what's next?
Well, I've got quite a few pairs of HT3's to build for
customers. But I'm still planning to build a pair with curly African cherry and
a madrone burl front baffle. I'll also be experimenting with an active version
of the HT3's using DEQX...stay tuned.
Stay tuned...
